Humans have become exceedingly dependent on electricity, it is arguable that it has now become a basic human need. In Africa, it is estimated that 600 million people lack access to electricity and are highly dependent on imported traditional fuels. A 2017 World Bank report predicts that while nearly 1 billion people in Sub Saharan Africa alone may gain electricity access by 2040, due to population growth, an estimated 530 million people in the region will not have electricity access (IEA 2014). Therefore, to meet the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals urgent measures need to be taken to support and facilitate the deployment of clean technology to improve global energy access, as access to energy is linked to several other sustainable development challenges such as health, education, food security, gender equality, poverty reduction, and climate change.
